You can start a direct message (DM) with anyone who follows you, including your friends.
Who can you message?
- People who follow you: ✅ Yes
- Friends (you follow each other): ✅ Yes
- People you follow who don't follow you back: ❌ No
- People on the same plan as you, with no follow: ❌ Not through a DM
Following someone doesn't let you message them. They need to follow you.
There are no message requests on Pie, so you can only start a DM with people who follow you.

To start a DM from someone's profile
- Open their profile.
- Tap •••.
- Tap message.
You'll only see message if they follow you.
To start a DM from the Chats tab
- Open the Chats tab.
- Tap +. A new chat opens.
- Use search pie friends to find the person you want to message. Only people who follow you appear in this list.
From your followers list
On your profile, tap N followers to open my friends and followers. On the followers tab, tap message next to someone you're friends with.
When your stars align
If you and someone else both star each other, you'll get a stars aligned! notification in your inbox with a chat button. Tap it to start chatting. See What Is a Star on Pie? for more.
FAQs
Why don't I see a message option on someone's profile?
They don't follow you yet. Once they follow you, you'll see message in the ••• menu on their profile.
Can I message someone just because we're going to the same plan?
Not through a DM, unless they follow you. You can still talk with them in the plan's group chat.
What about the plan's group chat?
That's separate from DMs. Once you've joined a plan, you're added to its group chat automatically.
What happens to my messages if I block someone?
The entire DM history is deleted for both of you when you block someone. It can't be recovered.
Can a host message all their attendees at once?
Yes. Hosts can send a blast, which goes out as a text message to attendees. That's different from a DM.
