Communicating with Guests

This article explains where messaging lives on Pie, who you can message, and how to communicate effectively as a host.

Where chat lives

There are two ways to communicate with guests on Pie:

  • Direct messages (DMs) → 1:1 conversations
  • Plan chat → shared group chat within a plan

Plan chat is the primary way to communicate with all guests in one place.

Who can message

Messaging access depends on your profile settings.

If you are a followable creator

(profile → settings → visibility → open to followers)

  • Guests automatically follow you the first time they join one of your plans
  • Because of this:
    • You can message them directly
    • They can message you
  • If a guest unfollows you:
    • Direct messaging is no longer available
    • This applies even if they are still in your plan
    • You can still communicate through plan chat

If you are not a followable creator

  • Messaging requires a mutual friendship
    • You must be friends with the guest
    • They must accept your request
  • If you are not friends:
    • Direct messaging is not available

👉 Being in the same plan does not guarantee direct messaging access

👉 Plan chat is always available for communication within a plan

Plan creation notifications

When you create a plan, your network is automatically notified based on the plan’s visibility:

Public plans → notify your Pie friends and followers

Friends-only plans → notify your Pie friends

Invite-only plans → only the people you invite are notified

Notification delivery depends on each user’s settings (push notifications, SMS, or both).

Plan creation notifications are sent once per day at 11am.

  • If you create a plan before 11am, it will go out the same day
  • If you create a plan after 11am, it will be included in the next day’s notification batch

For best visibility, consider posting earlier in the day to be included in the same day’s notification batch.

Best practices

  • Use plan chat for updates that apply to everyone
  • Use direct messages for 1:1 coordination
  • Keep communication clear and timely
  • Avoid over-messaging — only share what guests need to know

ℹ️ Important to know

  • Plan chat is the most reliable way to reach all guests
  • Direct messaging depends on follow or friendship status
  • Guests can leave or mute conversations at any time
